Energy Transfer’s Mid-Week Driving Message Targets Preventable Vehicle Incidents
Safety is more than a priority at Energy Transfer – it’s a daily commitment. When our Operations Support Safety Team noticed a spike in preventable vehicle incidents (PVIs) midweek, they launched a creative solution: weekly safety reminders delivered straight to employees’ phones.
Like many companies that manage large fleets of vehicles, Energy Transfer closely monitors PVIs – accidents that could have been avoided with safer driving practices. While our overarching goal is zero PVIs, we recognize that some incidents are likely to occur, and we are committed to keeping our Preventable Vehicle Incident Rate (PVIR) as low as possible as we work towards zero. In 2024, Energy Transfer recorded a PVIR of 1.04 – a rate that meets or exceeds industry standards – across more than 150 million miles driven.
Earlier this year, the Operations Support Safety Team spotted a surprising trend in the data: PVIs peaked on Wednesdays, with Tuesdays through Thursdays also showing elevated numbers. The team responded with a fresh approach aimed at boosting awareness and reinforcing safe driving behavior. The text messages cover topics such as distracted driving, keeping a safe distance to avoid rear-end collisions and staying rested to prevent drowsiness.

With over 7,200 drivers behind the wheel of company vehicles, Energy Transfer recognizes that consistent communication and shared responsibility are essential to keeping everyone safe. To ensure the message reaches everyone, whether in the office or out in the field, the team delivers these reminders via text message to all employees with a company-issued cell phone, making them immediate, accessible and impactful. Each week’s message, crafted through collaboration among the team, draws from real data, observed behaviors and lessons learned, serving as a timely prompt to stay alert and make safe choices when it matters most.
Over time, this initiative has evolved beyond a simple reminder system. Thanks to the continued leadership of the Operations Support Safety Team, it has become a proactive communication tool that strengthens safe habits and supports real-time decision-making across the organization.
The weekly message reinforces a simple truth: Safety isn’t just a moment at the start of a meeting or a monthly message – it’s a mindset we live out every mile, every task, every day.
